On today’s date -53 years ago – a woman named Rosa Parks took a stand (or should I say seat) for civil rights. What are you standing up for?
I also recently discovered a great wiki called wikiwebclass. It’s a wiki about HEROS. It includes both fictional and non-fictional heros. Here’s the page about Rosa Parks.
I also found this 2 minute 54 second video on YouTube:

For several years I taught a class called Participating in Democracy, wherein we talked about Rosa Parks. What’s good to remember is that she did not just get tired one day and decide to stay seated. In fact, her action was planned, and she trained extensively in order to be able to go through with it. She was scared to death! Moreover, after she took action, an African American woman, JoAnn Robinson, stayed up all night copying off flyers urging people to not ride the bus the next day. These flyers were posted by another group of African Americans–and all of these people risked their lives and their jobs to do this. In other words, we do these actions in groups of people who are committed to doing what’s right–we don’t have to do them by ourselves.
Thank you, Caroline, for posting this on your blog. It’s so important for us to all remember that we’re not alone in our struggles to do what’s right in the world.

Wow – I didn’t know any of that. Thanks for the extra info. I agree – it’s the power of groups that make things happen. That’s one of the things I like about social media – when it’s used for the good it can have a tremendous impact. Look what it did for Obama.
